Maurikios 7 was a chartoularios serving in Italy under the exarch Isaac (Isaakios 2): Lib. Pont. 73, 75. Some time between 638 and 640 he conspired with Isaakios 2 to plunder the Lateran Palace: Lib. Pont. 73. Later, in 643 or 644, he rebelled against Isaakios 2, supported by the troops in the vicinity of Rome who swore an oath of loyalty to him and hostility to Isaakios 2; Isaakios 2 sent troops under Donos 1 to Rome and the revolt collapsed; Maurikios 7 sought sanctuary in the Church of Beata Maria ad praesepe (Santa Maria Maggiore) but was removed and sent to Ravenna; before entering Ravenna he was beheaded (see Marinos 11 and Thomas 26), on orders from Isaakios 2, and his head was put on display in the circus at Ravenna; the death shortly afterwards of Isaakios 2 saved his fellow rebels from further punishment: Lib.
