Ceadwalla 1 was king of the Anglo-Saxons; after waging many wars in his own country, he converted to Christianity and went to Rome; he was warmly received by the Lombard king Cunincpert 1 (at Ticinum) and then went on to Rome, where he was baptised by pope Sergius (Sergios 30) and given the new name of Petrus; shortly afterwards he died and was buried in the basilica of St Peter; his epitaph is included in the Historia Langobardorum (and also in the Ecclesiastical History of Bede): Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 15; Bede, Hist. Eccl., V 7.
