When Maslama 2 became governor of Egypt and North Africa (in 670), he put al-Muhajir 1, who was "a mawla of his" (a client), in charge of Ifriqqiyah (Africa); al-Muhajir 1 remained in charge of Africa on behalf of Maslama 2 until the death of the caliph Mu`awiya 1 in 680: Tabari XVIII, p. 103.
